Sustainable Development Case Studies

These case studies support actions to reduce the region's overall carbon footprint by lowering the impact on of development on the environment, reducing the long-term maintenance of buildings and spaces and providing energy efficiency to lower overall energy costs.

Crossings at Valley View

Crossings at Valley View, located in Bloomington, Minnesota, is new construction composed of 50 multifamily rental units, all of which will be restricted to households with incomes at or below 50 percent of the area median income. Four of the units are specifically designated for households experiencing long-term homelessness.

GreenStep’s Cities: Eden Prairie

The City of Eden Prairie has been striving to be an energy efficient community for several years. An early example of this is the 20-40-15 program. It began in 2006 as an initiative to improve energy efficiency in city facilities and city vehicles. The initiative is still on track and is going very well.

Hawthorne EcoVillage Cluster

A four-block area in North Minneapolis that has been greatly impacted by foreclosure is implementing a redevelopment vision for the area to create a new, welcoming and sustainable community. The Hawthorne EcoVillage is named for the partners' commitment to a community that is both ecologically friendly and economically affordable.

Minnesota Energy Challenge

The Minnesota Energy Challenge is a website-based program run by local nonprofit Center for Energy and Environment. Using the website, Minnesota households can take action to lower their energy use and reduce their carbon footprint. Experts are available to answer any energy questions a visitor might have. Visitors are encouraged to join in a pledge to save energy and money in their homes.
